Phase 1 of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit has successfully transported over 250,000 passengers within just over 100 days since it began commercial operations, according to an official report.

John Zhao, an official from the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC), which both constructed and operates the rail system, made the announcement on Friday via his X (formerly Twitter) account.

According to Zhao, the rail network comprises two lines that span a total of 45 kilometers, connecting 12 stations.

The trains operate at a maximum speed of 100 km/h, providing efficient and safe transportation since its launch.

“The Phase I of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit by #CCECC has been operating safely for over 100 days! Consisting of 2 lines with a total length of 45 km and 12 stations, the maximum operating speed of the trains can reach 100 km/h,” Zhao stated in his post.

He added that the rail line connects Abuja’s city center, the international airport, and Kubwa satellite town, significantly easing traffic congestion in the capital city.

“During its operation, over 250,000 passengers have already been served, significantly reducing traffic congestion in the capital.

Take a look,” Zhao’s post read.

The Abuja Metro Rail, also known as the Metro Rail, commenced commercial operations on May 29, 2024, following its inauguration by President Bola Tinubu.

In line with efforts to promote mass transit, President Tinubu recently approved the extension of free rides on the Abuja Rail Mass Transit for another six months, continuing until the end of the year.

This decision follows an earlier announcement by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who granted commuters two months of free rides on the metro rail.
