Alex Ikwechegh, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has publicly apologized after a video surfaced of him in a heated altercation with a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, whom he accused of disrespect. The incident, which took place on October 27 in Abuja’s Maitama district, quickly drew public criticism.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police confirmed Ikwechegh was held for questioning. In a statement issued Tuesday, Ikwechegh expressed remorse, stating, “What began as a misunderstanding escalated into actions and remarks I deeply regret, which do not reflect the values and character I strive to uphold.”

Ikwechegh also apologized to Abuwatseya, acknowledging the frustration his actions had caused, and added that they have reached a respectful resolution through alternative dispute methods. The lawmaker extended his apology to Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun and affirmed his respect for the police force.

“This incident has been a humbling reminder of the necessity for restraint and self-control, especially in challenging circumstances,” Ikwechegh stated. He expressed regret over the impact of his actions on the National Assembly, noting, “I am aware that my actions reflect not only on myself but also on this esteemed institution and the trust the public places in us.”

He pledged to use this experience as a lesson in personal growth and as a call to better serve his constituents.
