United Nations Deputy Secretary-General (DSG) Amina Mohammed on Friday held a strategic meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, to enhance bilateral cooperation and support Nigeria’s development agenda.
The meeting, held at the Finance Ministry in Abuja, focused on critical areas including trade, economic growth, regional stability, and social protection, according to a statement by Mohammed Manga, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Finance.
During the discussions, both parties explored leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) to boost Nigeria’s regional trade and economic prospects. They also addressed improving food security, strengthening social protection systems, and mobilizing UN resources and expertise to support Nigeria’s development priorities.
Minister Edun, joined by the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, expressed gratitude to Amina Mohammed for her continued engagement with Nigeria. He outlined progress in government-led initiatives, particularly the digitalization of Direct Benefit Transfers to improve efficiency and transparency in social safety programs. He also highlighted advancements in agriculture, noting government interventions that have improved wet and dry season farming.
Amina Mohammed was accompanied by a high-level UN delegation, including Leonardo Simão, UN Special Representative; Sa’adatu Shuaibu, UN Political Affairs Officer; Zubaida Mahmoud, UN Representative; and Sergio Mate, UN Special Assistant.
The visit underscores the UN’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s development goals. “This meeting represents a significant milestone in strengthening the partnership between Nigeria and the UN, paving the way for enhanced collaboration on key socio-economic and development issues,” the statement noted.
As Nigeria navigates its development path, the UN’s expertise and support will remain critical in achieving sustainable progress.
