President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of soldiers killed in an attack on a military base in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State. The attack, carried out by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), occurred in the early hours of last Saturday.

According to military sources, the terrorists arrived in trucks and on motorcycles, launching a pre-dawn assault that resulted in the destruction of the base and military vehicles. The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the attackers were struck by fighter jets dispatched from Maiduguri, about 100 kilometers away, as they attempted to retreat.

In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu extended his condolences to the military, noting the sacrifice of six soldiers who lost their lives during the attack. He also directed a comprehensive investigation into the incident to uncover the circumstances and ensure lessons are learned to prevent future occurrences.

“This resolute action by the Army demonstrates the capability and readiness of our military to confront and defeat threats to our nation’s security,” the President said. “Their actions testify to our resolve to eradicate terrorism and banditry, paving the way for a future where peace and security prevail for all Nigerians.”

Tinubu commended the armed forces for their swift retaliatory response, particularly the air component, which neutralized numerous terrorists and destroyed their assets. He urged the military to maintain a proactive approach by taking the fight directly to the camps of terrorists and bandits, especially in the Northwest, where criminal activities continue to disrupt the lives of innocent citizens.

The President also called on Nigerians and the media to rally behind the military’s efforts to restore peace and stability across the nation. “Your sacrifices and dedication do not go unnoticed, and we stand firmly behind you in this ongoing fight to eliminate these threats,” he added.

This attack underscores the persistent threat posed by insurgents in the region and the ongoing efforts by the Nigerian military to counter their activities.
