Heartland FC has announced the tragic death of Coach Christian Obi, who passed away on Friday, August 23, 2024, following a road accident.

Obi was en route to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, to participate in the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme Preseason Tournament when the accident occurred.

According to a statement from Heartland Media, the team had left the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri at around 3:30 p.m. in three vehicles.

Shortly after, one vehicle collided with a truck that was parked carelessly while attempting to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

The impact caused severe injury to Coach Obi, who was initially found unconscious with a slight injury to his right leg.

Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital in Okwelle, Onuimo LGA, Imo State, medical efforts could not save him.

The statement described the loss as a deep blow to the club, highlighting Obi’s significant contributions, including leading the team to an unbeaten run in the Nigeria National League during the 2022-23 season and winning the NNL Super 8 in Asaba, Delta State.

Heartland FC has requested privacy for the family and the club during this mourning period and will not be making further statements at this time.

Coach Obi’s remains have been taken to the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH) morgue in Owerri, while injured players have been transferred to the same hospital for additional care..
