The Imo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged shooting of a boy by a Catholic priest during a cross-over night mass at St. Columbus Catholic Church in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State. The incident occurred on December 31, 2024, leaving the Amaimo community in shock and mourning.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the tragedy unfolded during the New Year celebration. While details remain unclear, differing accounts have emerged regarding the events leading to the shooting. Some residents claimed that the victim had thrown a firework, commonly referred to as a “knockout,” into the church. Others suggested the incident might have been caused by an accidental discharge of the firearm, rather than an intentional act by the priest.

The community has been plunged into sorrow, with residents expressing outrage and demanding justice for the deceased. Speaking on condition of anonymity, some described the event as a painful loss that has cast a shadow over their New Year festivities.

The leadership of the Catholic Church in the area has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Imo Police Command, Henry Okoye, stated: “Yes, a detailed investigation has been initiated to ascertain the remote facts surrounding the incident. Further developments on the case will be communicated in due course.”

As the investigation unfolds, the community awaits answers and justice for the tragic incident.
