The Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), announced the arrest of 1,345 suspects and the seizure of 8.43 million kilograms of illicit drugs in 2024.
State Commander Mr. Abubakar Idris-Ahmad disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano on Thursday.
The suspects, comprising 1,301 males and 44 females, were linked to various drug-related activities.
The seized substances included cannabis, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, codeine, and over five million tramadol tablets.
The command also secured 128 convictions for drug-related offences during the year.
Highlighting the agency’s proactive measures, Idris-Ahmad said, “We initiated ‘Operation Hana Maye’ (Operation Stop Drug Abuse) to combat drug abuse and foster a safer environment in Kano State.
Through this initiative, we dismantled over 20 drug joints in notorious areas, including Filin Idi, Dan Agundi, Sani Abacha Youth Center, and Sani Abacha Stadium.”
The command also conducted 1,114 drug integrity tests for council election candidates to promote responsible leadership and governance.
Additionally, 207 anti-drug campaigns and 202 visa clearance tests were carried out to curb drug trafficking and uphold Nigeria’s reputation.
In a bid to rehabilitate drug users, the NDLEA provided counselling and reintegration programs for 101 addicts.
Idris-Ahmad expressed gratitude to NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba-Marwa, for his unwavering support.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the Kano State Government, sister security agencies, traditional institutions, and stakeholders in the fight against drug abuse.
“Our officers have demonstrated tireless effort, commitment, and professionalism.
We remain dedicated to dismantling drug trafficking networks through intelligence-driven operations and community partnerships to ensure a safer and healthier society,” Idris-Ahmad assured.
