Senator Adenigba Fadahunsi, representing Osun East, has urged the federal and state governments to prioritize large-scale rice production as a strategy to stabilize the naira and reduce reliance on imports.

During an event in Ilase-Ijesa where 3,000 bags of rice were distributed to groups across the 10 local government areas of his senatorial district, Fadahunsi highlighted the critical need for self-sufficiency in rice production to mitigate the foreign exchange spent on imports.

“The annual foreign exchange spent on rice importation is staggering.

By producing sufficient quantities locally, we can significantly reduce this expenditure and strengthen the naira,” Fadahunsi stated.

“Rice has become a staple for Nigerians across all demographics, making it imperative for the government to ensure availability at affordable prices”, he continued.

He called on both federal and state authorities to act swiftly to expand rice cultivation, noting that achieving self-reliance in food production would foster economic stability and shield the nation’s currency from further depreciation.

Fadahunsi also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, urging beneficiaries at the event to remain hopeful and prayerful for better days ahead in 2025.

A statement by his media adviser, Sam Segun-Progress, further described the rice distribution as part of the senator’s effort to alleviate economic challenges faced by constituents.

It highlighted the participation of traditional rulers, religious leaders, market women, and other groups in receiving the relief items.

The leadership of market women from Osun East paid a courtesy visit to the senator during the event, lauding his commitment to the welfare of traders and appealing for additional support.

Fadahunsi reaffirmed his dedication to improving the living standards of his constituents and called on stakeholders to collaborate in enhancing local food production to ensure economic growth and stability.
