Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, has announced an increase in subscription prices for Nigerian users, effective immediately for new customers and starting January 27, 2025, for existing subscribers.
In an email sent to customers on Friday, the company cited the need to improve its network infrastructure and ensure high-quality service delivery as the reason for the price adjustment.
The revised pricing structure includes the following monthly rates:
Standard (Residential): N75,000
Mobile – Regional (Roam Unlimited): N167,000
Mobile – Global (Global Roam): N717,000
“These changes reflect our commitment to investing in the infrastructure needed to support and improve your experience with Starlink,” the company stated.
Subscribers were also informed of the option to cancel their subscriptions if they no longer wish to continue with the service.
This is not the first time Starlink has increased prices in Nigeria. In September, the company announced a 97% hike, raising its standard plan from N38,000 to N75,000. At the time, Starlink attributed the increase to inflation. However, the Nigerian Communications Commission initially threatened sanctions for the unauthorized hike but later withdrew its statement, causing regulatory uncertainty.
Following backlash, Starlink temporarily reversed the September price increase and issued credits to affected customers while addressing regulatory concerns.
Since launching in Nigeria in December 2022—its first market in Africa—Starlink has been praised for delivering internet access to remote and underserved areas. However, its pricing model has drawn criticism for being unaffordable to many Nigerians, especially during challenging economic times.
The latest price hike raises concerns about the accessibility of the service and its alignment with the purchasing power of the average Nigerian.
