The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has dismissed accusations by the Niger Republic that Nigeria and other member states are colluding with France to destabilize the country.

The regional bloc described the claims as baseless and reaffirmed its support for Nigeria and other member nations.

On Thursday, the Niger Republic’s military leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, alleged that Nigeria was working with France against his country. In response, Nigeria’s federal government firmly denied the allegations.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, issued a statement categorically rejecting the claims, emphasizing Nigeria’s longstanding commitment to regional peace and security.

The statement clarified that Nigeria has never engaged in any alliance—overt or covert—with France or any other nation to destabilize Niger.

Idris described the allegations as mere fabrications with no basis in reality.

Echoing this sentiment, ECOWAS also issued a statement on Thursday, condemning the allegations as unfounded.

The bloc reaffirmed its support for Nigeria and other member states, highlighting their consistent efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.

For years, Nigeria has been a key player in fostering regional security, particularly through its leadership of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which has achieved significant successes in counterterrorism efforts.

ECOWAS noted that such a track record underscores Nigeria’s commitment to the well-being of its neighbors and refuted any notion of the country sponsoring terrorism.

The regional body called on all states within West Africa to prioritize dialogue, promote stability, and avoid making unsubstantiated accusations.

It urged collaboration among nations to address shared challenges and strengthen regional unity.
