Human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has been released from custody after fulfilling the bail conditions set by a Chief Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti. Farotimi is reportedly on his way to his home in Lagos.

The news of his release was confirmed by politician and activist Omoyele Sowore, who announced the development via a post on X (formerly Twitter). “I am pleased to report that Dele Farotimi is no longer being held at the prison yards in Ekiti state and is now returning home to Lagos. The struggle continues!” Sowore wrote.

Arrest and Court Proceedings

Farotimi was arrested earlier this month on allegations of defamation against Senior Advocate of Nigeria and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), Afe Babalola. He was subsequently remanded in a correctional facility in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

Last week, the Chief Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti granted the activist lawyer bail in the sum of N30 million. On Friday morning, Farotimi arrived at the court premises at around 9:45 a.m. under heavy security presence to finalize his release process.

Statements from Activists

Farotimi’s release has been met with relief from supporters and activists who have closely followed the case. Another lawyer and activist, Chidi Odinakalu, also took to X to confirm the development and urge continued vigilance.

“In Ekiti, @DeleFarotimi has perfected bail & regained his freedom. He’ll be on his way back to Lagos. To all the friends of Justice who have been vigilant through this, we say please remain vigilant. It is not the end nor the beginning of the end. This is an #AttritionMarathon,” Odinakalu wrote.

Farotimi’s legal battle has drawn significant attention, with many in the activist community viewing the case as a test of free speech and justice in Nigeria.
