The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that the death toll from the tragic stampede during a palliative distribution event in Okija has risen to 22. The incident occurred during a rice-sharing event organized by the Obi Jackson Foundation, led by Chief Ernest Obiejesi, to support the less privileged during the festive season.

Initially, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, reported three fatalities on Saturday. However, in a statement released on Sunday, Ikenga revised the figure and disclosed that several victims remain hospitalized in the Ihiala Local Government Area, fighting for survival.

Despite the police’s confirmation, eyewitness accounts suggest the death toll could exceed 40.

Government and Police React

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the tragedy. While visiting the victims alongside the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, the governor described the incident as “regrettable” and extended condolences to the affected families.

Governor Soludo emphasized the importance of adopting safer and more structured methods for distributing relief materials. Through his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, he outlined measures to prevent future occurrences, including decentralizing distribution points, prioritizing vulnerable groups, and implementing better crowd management protocols.

“The Anambra State Government has initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stampede. Relevant agencies will work to identify any negligence or lapses in safety protocols,” the governor stated.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, also visited the victims and reaffirmed the police’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents. “The Commissioner observed that 22 people lost their lives and extended his sympathies to the bereaved families,” Ikenga added.

Speaker and Community Leaders Respond

Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, expressed sadness over the tragedy, describing it as “unfortunate and disheartening.” He commended the philanthropic intent behind the event but stressed the need for better event planning and crowd management to avoid similar disasters.

“The Speaker appreciates the quick response of the state government in initiating a thorough investigation into the incident and prays for the eternal rest of the deceased and the speedy recovery of the injured,” read a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Emma Madu.

A Community in Mourning

The stampede claimed the lives of women, children, the elderly, and nursing mothers, leaving the Okija community devastated. Governor Soludo called the loss “heartbreaking” and pledged to implement stricter safety measures for future events.

As investigations continue, the Anambra State Government has urged organizations and individuals involved in charitable activities to prioritize safety and ensure the well-being of beneficiaries during public events.
