Niger North Senator and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Distinguished Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, on Thursday, emphasized the critical need for increased funding for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He made this call during the deliberation on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2024 Budget Presentation to the National Assembly, where lawmakers offered observations and input on the proposed fiscal plan.

While commending President Tinubu for a well-articulated budget with commendable focus on key priority areas such as defence, security, infrastructure, health, and education, Senator Sani Bello underscored the overlooked yet crucial role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in reshaping Nigeria’s global image.

In his address, Senator Sani Bello stated:
“Mr. President, I would have wished that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs be included among the priority areas. As Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, I can assure you that our over 100 missions abroad are in dire need of support. Many of these missions are burdened with debt, operate from dilapidated properties, and are struggling to remain functional.”

The Distinguished Senator further highlighted the urgency of addressing these concerns, adding:
“Foreign Affairs represents the image of every nation. I appeal to this esteemed chamber to ensure we provide the necessary support for the Ministry. It is concerning that almost a year into this administration, we are yet to appoint ambassadors—largely due to funding constraints. With the current budget allocation and the realities of the exchange rate, the Ministry simply cannot meet its obligations. This is a matter that requires immediate attention, as the situation has become increasingly embarrassing for Nigeria.”

Senator Sani Bello passionately urged President Tinubu and his colleagues to prioritize the Ministry’s funding, stressing its significance in maintaining Nigeria’s diplomatic relationships and enhancing the country’s global reputation.

In conclusion, Senator Sani Bello congratulated President Tinubu on presenting a comprehensive and forward-looking budget, expressing hope that it would be fully implemented in the coming year to address critical national needs.
