A young Nigerian man sentenced to death by hanging for stealing a fowl in Osun State has been granted a state pardon by Governor Ademola Adeleke.
This was disclosed in a statement posted on the governor’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday. Governor Adeleke revealed that he had ordered a thorough investigation into the case while directing the state attorney general to take immediate action.
“I have received the report of a case of a young man reportedly sentenced to death by hanging in Osun State for stealing a fowl,” the governor stated.
He further announced, “Consequently, I have directed the attorney general and commissioner for justice, Osun State, to commence a full investigation into the matter and initiate processes to grant prerogative of mercy to the young man.”
Reaffirming his commitment to justice, Adeleke emphasized, “Osun is a land of justice and equity, and we must ensure fairness and protection of the sanctity of lives. I assure members of the public that this matter is receiving my direct attention, with every sense of urgency attached to our response.”
The governor’s swift intervention has been widely praised, as many expressed shock and disbelief over the severe sentence handed down for such a minor offense.
