Olumuyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), has highlighted the potential of social media as a critical tool for law enforcement. Speaking at the fifth edition of the Bodex Social Media Hangout (BSMH) in Lagos, Adejobi stressed the importance of embracing digital platforms to enhance policing and solve crimes effectively.

“Social media is not just a platform for entertainment; it’s a valuable tool for law enforcement. By leveraging the power of the mass number of social media active users, we can solve more crimes and make our communities safer,” Adejobi said during his presentation titled ‘The Digital Detective: Solving Crimes in the Social Media Age.’

The BSMH, a collaborative forum for social media users, professionals, and stakeholders, centered this year’s discussion on ‘Social Media: The Influence, Power, and Impact.’

Insights from Industry Experts

Dotun Babatunde, a digital communication professional, delved into ‘The Impact of AI on Social Media’ and its transformative effects. He explained how AI-driven algorithms amplify sensational content to capture attention while offering opportunities for personalized engagement.

“We live in an attention economy, where human attention is a scarce commodity,” Babatunde remarked, urging users to approach AI with caution, recognizing both its benefits and risks.

Tayo Popoola, an associate professor of mass communication at the University of Lagos, described social media as a double-edged sword. While it empowers marginalized voices, it also fosters misinformation and toxicity. Popoola called for greater digital literacy to help users maximize social media’s benefits while mitigating its adverse effects.

Government Commitment

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by OreOluwa Finnih, his special adviser on sustainable development goals (SDG), reiterated the government’s commitment to leveraging social media for societal growth and well-being.

The Bodex Social Media Hangout continues to serve as a platform for addressing the evolving role of social media in shaping society, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and promoting responsible digital engagement.
