The First Lady of Ogun State, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, has emphasized the importance of providing comprehensive support, care, and justice for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV).

Speaking during the commissioning of a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) in Ijebu Ode on Wednesday, Mrs. Abiodun lauded the state government’s efforts under the World Bank-supported Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP) to establish the centre. She described the initiative as a significant step toward building a society where survivors can access the care and support they need.

“The construction of the SARC is a bold move by the Ogun State Government to ensure survivors receive not just hope but justice, immediate care, and emotional support,” she said.

As the Chairperson of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law Management Committee, Mrs. Abiodun shared her experiences addressing cases of rape, sexual assault, and child abuse, noting that referral centres play a crucial role in delivering comprehensive care.

She added, “The Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, which we have worked tirelessly to implement, is already yielding results. It has empowered survivors, strengthened communities to stand against perpetrators, and ensured offenders face the full weight of the law. We’ve seen an increase in reported cases and successful prosecutions, thanks to the exemplary work of law enforcement agencies, healthcare professionals, and social workers.”

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Adijat Adeleye, described the SARC as more than just a building but a sanctuary of hope, healing, and resilience.

“The centre is a safe haven where survivors of sexual violence will find compassion, professional care, and the tools to rebuild their lives,” Adeleye said, urging stakeholders, government agencies, and community leaders to unite in combating sexual violence to create an inclusive society free from fear and discrimination.

World Bank Team Lead, Ms. Pamela Chebiwott Tuitott, highlighted the project’s broader objectives, which include driving economic growth, strengthening the agri-food value chain, and addressing gender disparities.

Project Coordinator for OGSTEP, Mrs. Mosunmola Owo-Odunsi, emphasized the importance of supporting gender-based interventions, stating, “Helping survivors move past their trauma and rebuild their lives is critical to ensuring a more rewarding future for all.”

The inauguration of the SARC marks a significant milestone in Ogun State’s efforts to combat gender-based violence, empowering survivors and holding perpetrators accountable while fostering a society built on justice and compassion.
