The Swedish Prosecution Authority has announced the closure of its investigation into rape allegations against French football star Kylian Mbappé, citing insufficient evidence to proceed.
The decision, reported Thursday morning, concludes a case that garnered international attention and cast a shadow over the athlete’s career.
Mbappé, who has consistently denied the allegations, has yet to issue an official statement regarding the outcome. His legal team previously affirmed his commitment to cooperating with the Swedish justice system while maintaining his innocence.
Quoting AFP, reports from October 17, 2024, revealed that Mbappé had been “linked to a rape investigation in Sweden.” His lawyer, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, stated at the time that he intended to provide explanations directly to the Swedish authorities if necessary.
“He prioritises providing his explanations, if required, to the Swedish judiciary,” Canu-Bernard told AFP, firmly condemning “media allegations suggesting that Kylian Mbappé had commented on the events of his trip to Stockholm.”
The allegations stemmed from an alleged incident earlier this year in Stockholm. The prosecutor’s decision to drop the case brings an end to months of speculation and scrutiny surrounding the Paris Saint-Germain forward.
The conclusion of the investigation marks a significant relief for Mbappé, as he can now fully refocus on his football career without the cloud of legal uncertainty.
