Former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, are currently attending the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Both political figures are special guests of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), a Washington DC-based organization dedicated to promoting democratic values worldwide.
Joining them is former Senate President Ken Nnamani, who was also invited by the NDI. Although the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, was extended an invitation, he did not attend the event.
The presence of Osinbajo at this significant political gathering underscores his growing international engagement and elevated global political profile since leaving office in May 2023. The Democratic National Convention, a pivotal event in the US political landscape, serves as a platform for discussing key policies and strategies within the Democratic Party, in addition to the formal nomination of the party’s presidential candidate and current US Vice President, Kamala Harris.
The convention offers global leaders and stakeholders the opportunity to participate in discussions that may influence global political trends. Since its founding in 1983, the NDI has been at the forefront of supporting and strengthening democratic institutions worldwide, providing technical assistance to political parties, civic groups, and election processes with a focus on promoting citizen participation, transparency, and accountability in governance.
