Bayern Munich has made a monumental decision to retire the number 5 jersey in tribute to the legendary Franz Beckenbauer, the club announced on Sunday.
The club confirmed that no player will wear the number five shirt in the future, a fitting tribute to one of the greatest footballers of all time.
Beckenbauer, who passed away on January 7, 2024, was widely regarded as a football icon. Known as “Der Kaiser,” he remains one of only nine players to have won the FIFA World Cup, the European Champions Cup, and the Ballon d’Or.
His remarkable career includes leading West Germany to victory in the 1972 European Championships and the 1974 World Cup.
At Bayern Munich, Beckenbauer won three consecutive Bundesliga titles and a trio of European Cups, cementing his legacy as a dominant force in world football.
His commanding presence on the pitch earned him the nickname “Der Kaiser,” meaning “The Emperor.”
In addition to his achievements as a player, Beckenbauer enjoyed a successful managerial career with Bayern.
He led the club to a Bundesliga title in 1994 and the UEFA Cup in 1996. He also served as Bayern’s president, leaving an indelible mark on the club.
“Forever our Kaiser,” Bayern Munich wrote in a heartfelt tribute on X. “In memory of Franz Beckenbauer, FC Bayern will never again assign the number 5 jersey.”
