A devastating fire broke out at the popular “Oja Agbe” farmer’s market in Moniya, Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State, around midnight on December 2nd, destroying properties valued at millions of naira.
The blaze, which affected numerous shops, containers, and kiosks, was contained through the swift intervention of the Oyo State Fire Service, preventing it from spreading to nearby residential areas.
In a statement, the Fire Service Manager, Akinyemi Akinyinka, confirmed that his team received a distress call at 12:27 a.m.
Reporting the incident, Mr. Adelola said shops at Moniya Garage, Oja Agbe, were engulfed in flames.
Firefighters, led by ACFS Oyedeji, were immediately dispatched to the scene.
“Upon arrival, we found rows of shops and container kiosks ablaze.
We quickly took action, curtailing the fire and preventing it from spreading further,” Akinyinka said.
While no lives were lost, significant damage was reported.
Preliminary investigations suggested that the fire originated from unattended electrical appliances.
The fire service manager urged residents to exercise caution, particularly during the harmattan season, to prevent similar incidents.
“Fire safety must remain a priority,” he emphasized.
