The Taraba State Government has announced the temporary closure of Danbaba Suntai Airport in Jalingo to facilitate ongoing upgrade works aimed at modernising the facility. The closure, which was approved by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, took effect immediately and will remain in place until December 20, 2024.
In a press release issued on Friday, Kwantar Genesis, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation Development, explained that the closure is necessary for the safe and timely completion of construction projects that began in January 2024.
These projects include the construction of drainage systems, the installation of a perimeter fence, the upgrade of the Instrument Landing System, and the extension of the runway from 2.4 kilometers to 3 kilometers. Additionally, two new fire tenders will be acquired as part of the improvements.
Kwantar emphasized that these upgrades reflect the Taraba State Government’s commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure. He noted that once completed, the enhanced airport facilities will not only serve the needs of local commuters but will also strengthen connectivity to neighbouring states.
While acknowledging the inconvenience the closure may cause, Kwantar urged the public to be patient, assuring them that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the project is completed on schedule. “These improvements are ultimately for the benefit of the public,” he said. “The upgraded airport will provide a safer and more efficient travel experience.”
