The 2024/25 Premier League season began with a flurry of action on Saturday, as Brighton, Arsenal, and Liverpool all secured victories in their opening matches.
Brighton 3-0 Everton
Brighton’s new manager, Fabian Hurzeler, made a stunning Premier League debut with a 3-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park.
Kaoru Mitoma, Danny Welbeck, and Simon Adingra were on target for Brighton, marking a dismal start to Everton’s final season at their historic ground.
The match saw controversy as referee Simon Hooper initially awarded a penalty to Everton before reversing the decision after VAR review.
Everton’s woes were compounded by Ashley Young’s red card in the 66th minute.
Arsenal 2-0 Wolves
Arsenal kicked off their campaign with a solid 2-0 victory over Wolves at the Emirates Stadium.
Goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka provided a promising start for Mikel Arteta’s side in their quest for the title, which they have not won in 21 years.
Despite Wolves’ late pressure, Saka’s 74th-minute goal secured all three points for the Gunners.
Newcastle 1-0 Southampton
Joelinton’s 45th-minute goal handed 10-man Newcastle a narrow 1-0 victory over Southampton.
Despite playing with a numerical disadvantage for over an hour following Fabian Schar’s red card, Newcastle managed to secure the win.
Southampton, who dominated possession, struggled to capitalize on their chances in their return to the top flight.
Ipswich 0-2 Liverpool
Liverpool spoiled Ipswich’s Premier League return with a 2-0 win, thanks to goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah.
Ipswich, back in the top flight after 22 years, held their own in the first half but faltered in the second as Liverpool’s attacking prowess shone through, giving new boss Arne Slot a winning start.
Nottingham Forest 1-1 Bournemouth
Nottingham Forest’s Premier League opener ended in a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth.
Chris Wood gave Forest a first-half lead, but Antoine Semenyo equalized for Bournemouth in the 85th minute. The match was marred by a serious injury to Forest’s Danilo, but Bournemouth showed promise, with record signing Evanilson set to bolster their attack.
The season has kicked off with intense performances and high expectations, setting the stage for an exciting Premier League campaign ahead.
