The Federal Government removed Ohieku Salami from his position as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State, citing misconduct and procedural violations.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the decision on Wednesday, highlighting actions by Salami described as “unbecoming of his office.”
These included the suspension of the Vice-Chancellor without adhering to established procedures.
A statement by Folashade Boriowo, Director of Press for the Federal Ministry of Education, detailed Salami’s refusal to reverse the suspension despite interventions and formal requests from the ministry.
The statement also accused Salami of engaging in “abusive and threatening behavior” towards ministry officials, including the Permanent Secretary.
“The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, noted that such conduct undermines the ministry’s supervisory role over the university and jeopardises the institution’s stability and governance,” the statement read.
To address the situation, the minister has directed the appointment of a new Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council Chairman for the university.
The move aims to restore effective governance and ensure compliance with principles of law, due process, and accountability.
This development underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining integrity and stability in the administration of higher education institutions.
