The Delta State House of Assembly has passed the Electricity Power Sector Bill, 2024, aimed at improving electricity supply and fostering economic growth throughout the state.
The bill, which was expedited, was passed on Wednesday during a plenary session led by Speaker Dennis Guwor. The House Majority Leader, Emeka Nwaobi, moved to suspend Order 12, Rules 79-83 of the Assembly’s standing rules, enabling the third reading and swift passage of the bill.
This motion was seconded by Frank Esenwah, a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) representing Oshimili North Constituency, and it received unanimous approval in a voice vote.
Following the passage of the bill, Speaker Guwor expressed optimism about its potential impact on the state’s development. “The passage of this bill represents a significant step in improving electricity supply in the state. I believe it will promote living standards and enhance the overall well-being of the people of Delta State,” he stated.
The Speaker also commended his colleagues for their commitment throughout the legislative process. “Distinguished colleagues, I sincerely appreciate your support and contributions throughout the legislative process of this bill. I am grateful for your immense efforts in improving the electricity sector of the state,” he added.
Once signed into law by the Governor, the new bill is expected to lay a stronger foundation for better electricity services and economic growth in Delta State.
