Donald Trump clinched victory in the U.S. presidential election on Wednesday, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in what is being described as a stunning political comeback. The results, which came faster than expected, included key wins in swing states like Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.
Trump celebrated his win at a Florida victory party, declaring, “It’s a political victory that our country has never seen before.” His success follows an unprecedented criminal conviction, a near-assassination attempt, and warnings from a former chief of staff who called him a “fascist.”
Meanwhile, Harris’s campaign confirmed she would not speak to her supporters on election night. Cedric Richmond, co-chair of the Harris campaign, told attendees at a watch party at Howard University in Washington, “You won’t hear from the vice president tonight, but you will hear from her tomorrow.”
Harris, who entered the race in July after President Joe Biden dropped out, ran a centrist campaign that focused on criticizing Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric and divisive messages on race and immigration. However, Trump’s focus on immigration and isolationism resonated with voters weary from the post-Covid economy and eager for change.
This victory makes Trump the first president in over a century to win a non-consecutive second term, highlighting the ongoing political divides within the country.
