President Bola Tinubu has postponed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, initially set for today, to a later date in tribute to Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, who passed away on Tuesday night. The rescheduling was confirmed in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
General Lagbaja, whose death was previously announced by the Presidency, served as the 27th Chief of Army Staff from June 19, 2023, until his passing on November 5, 2024. President Tinubu also directed that flags be flown at half-staff across the nation for seven days to honor his legacy.
In a prior statement, Tinubu expressed heartfelt condolences to the Lagbaja family and the Nigerian Armed Forces, praising the late general’s “significant contributions to the nation” and wishing him eternal peace.
Lt. General Lagbaja, an alumnus of the Nigerian Defence Academy, began his military career in 1987 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1992. His distinguished service included roles as a platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion.
He was instrumental in numerous internal security operations, including Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States.
