The Bauchi Emirate Council has revoked the traditional title of ‘Majidadin Bauchi’ from Senator Shehu Umar Buba due to alleged disrespect towards Governor Bala Mohammed.

Buba, who represents Bauchi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while Bauchi State is governed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The conflict stems from Buba’s criticism of Governor Mohammed’s remarks about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.

Governor Mohammed had denounced Tinubu’s speech as ineffective and criticized his handling of national issues.

In response, Buba defended the president, asserting that Mohammed’s critique was misplaced and accusing the governor of exacerbating hardships in Bauchi State.

Buba alleged that Governor Mohammed failed to distribute essential aid, including 70 trucks of guinea corn, 70 trucks of fertilizer, and 20 trucks of rice donated by the federal government.

Mukhtar Gidado, Special Adviser on Media to Governor Mohammed, countered these claims, stating that the aid is being prepared for distribution and a committee, chaired by the Emir of Jama’are, has been established to manage it.

In a letter dated August 14, 2023, the Emirate Council formally notified Senator Buba of the withdrawal of his traditional title.

The letter, signed by Nasiru Musa on behalf of the Emirate’s Secretary, detailed that the council had deliberated on Buba’s actions and concluded that his conduct disrespected the governor, which was inconsistent with the values and traditions of the Bauchi Emirate.
