The Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, urged the 25 Local Government Council Chairmen across the state to enforce the new minimum wage for council workers by November 2024.
The governor issued this directive on Tuesday during a meeting with the Delta State leadership of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).
“The passing of the Local Government autonomy law has increased the Council’s responsibilities,” Oborevwori remarked.
” I advise that you must implement the new minimum wage for their workers effective November 2024,” he continued.
The governor also stressed the importance of following procurement regulations, instructing, “Council Chairmen need to comply fully with the procurement law in all your procurements.”
In a move to promote sound financial management, Governor Oborevwori proposed a retreat to educate relevant council officials on effective financial practices, with the participation of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Key government officials, including the Auditor General for Local Government, the Secretary to the State Government, the Chief of Staff, the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, and the State Accountant-General, were also present at the meeting.
