John Enoh, Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, has vowed to thoroughly investigate the issues that led to Team Nigeria’s failure to win any medals at the Olympics.
Speaking on Channels TV’s “Politics Today”, Enoh expressed disappointment over the outcome, noting that he did not expect the team to return empty-handed.
Enoh attributed the loss to a lack of motivation, despite the substantial financial support provided to the athletes.
He mentioned that over N8 billion was spent on the competition, with some athletes receiving payments in advance.
“The Ministry of Sports Development under my watch will thoroughly probe every matter that has been the problem.
We will not ignore it. We will deal with it head-on,” Enoh assured.
He also emphasized the need for reform within the sporting federations, which he said have strong control over athlete selection and decision-making.
“The federations are very strong in their defense of what decisions they make.
They guard what they do so jealously that any attempt by any minister to reach out in things like this is considered interference,” Enoh explained.
The minister further stated that, under his leadership, efforts were made to avoid the recurring issues that have plagued Nigeria’s international sporting engagements in recent years.
