Nigeria’s Super Eagles have officially been declared winners of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifying match against Libya, following a distressing 20-hour ordeal at Al-Abraq Airport. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the ruling on October 23, 2024, after determining that the Libya Football Federation had breached key regulations on the treatment of the Nigerian team.
Originally set for October 15 in Benghazi, the match was disrupted by severe logistical challenges. The Nigerian team’s flight was unexpectedly diverted, and upon landing at an alternate airport, they were held without sufficient food or water, sparking public outrage in Nigeria.
CAF’s Disciplinary Board ruled the game a forfeit, awarding Nigeria a 3-0 victory. Libya was found in violation of Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations, as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code, resulting in a $50,000 fine payable within 60 days.
The ruling emphasized the unacceptable treatment of visiting teams and aimed to set a strong precedent. Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen expressed relief for his team’s safe return, noting the psychological impact on the players. This incident has raised urgent calls for stronger accountability and protection within African football, with Nigeria hopeful that CAF’s decisive response will prevent future incidents.
