Botchwey, a 61-year-old former lawmaker and Ghana’s foreign minister for the past seven years, was elected by leaders of the 56 Commonwealth nations during a meeting in Apia, Samoa, on Friday. She will officially assume office on April 1, 2025.
President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria congratulated Botchwey on her election and expressed confidence in her qualifications for the role. A statement from Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), noted that Nigeria fully supported Botchwey’s candidacy for the prestigious position.
Tinubu emphasized that Botchwey’s extensive career in public administration, foreign affairs, and regional development uniquely positions her for this leadership role.
“He trusts that Botchwey’s leadership experience will bring renewed energy to the Commonwealth’s efforts to advance meaningful economic and political partnerships that drive development and amplify the bloc’s voice in global affairs,” the statement read.
Furthermore, President Tinubu expressed eagerness to collaborate with the incoming Secretary-General to promote the Commonwealth’s vision of fostering peace, equity, and prosperity among all member nations.
He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing intra-Commonwealth trade, boosting African exports, and advocating for a unified representation at the United Nations to support Africa’s bid for permanent membership on the Security Council.
The President also extended gratitude to the outgoing Secretary-General, Baroness Patricia Scotland, for her years of dedicated leadership and wished her success in her future endeavors.
