President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside other prominent Nigerian leaders, has paid glowing tributes to former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, as he marks his 90th birthday. Tinubu described Gowon as a “gentleman extraordinaire” and one of Nigeria’s longest-serving leaders, praising his role in shaping the country’s history.

In a personally signed message, Tinubu lauded Gowon’s contributions, both in the military and in civilian service. “As a brilliant officer trained at Sandhurst who reluctantly became Nigeria’s leader at 32, his life story has inspired many Nigerians,” Tinubu said. “As head of state, he significantly contributed to nation-building and development and can be rightly called the father of national infrastructure. After the Civil War, his philosophy of ‘No victor, no vanquished’ helped promote national healing, peace, and reconciliation.”

Former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Olusegun Obasanjo also joined in celebrating Gowon’s 90th birthday. Buhari, in a message signed by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, hailed Gowon’s visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity. “We honour his invaluable contributions to our country’s continued existence as one and the progress that has come with that,” Buhari stated.

At a public lecture in Abuja to mark the occasion, Obasanjo emphasized the significance of celebrating Gowon while he is alive, describing him as a man whose life deserves to be honored. “Reaching 90 is no small feat, and we are privileged to witness it,” Obasanjo remarked.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’adu Abubakar III, who chaired the lecture, praised Gowon for his dedication to keeping Nigeria united during its most difficult times. “He fought hard for this country’s unity and deserves to be celebrated. May God grant him more years beyond 100 in good health,” the Sultan said.

Similarly, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, congratulated Gowon, calling him “patriotism personified,” while the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) described him as a beacon of hope for a better Nigeria. In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the ACF highlighted Gowon’s efforts in nation-building, especially during and after the Civil War.

“General Gowon belongs to that unique and unforgettable category of leaders who gave their all to ensure the Nigerian project remains realizable. His leadership during the Civil War and his pursuit of the Three Rs – Reconstruction, Reconciliation, and Rehabilitation – stand as a testament to his commitment to the nation’s future,” the ACF said.

The tributes reflected on Gowon’s enduring legacy of service and his role as a stabilizing force during one of Nigeria’s most challenging periods. Many prayed for his continued health and long life, celebrating a man whose leadership and humility have left a lasting mark on the country.
