Resident Doctors Threaten Nationwide Strike

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has issued a warning of a nationwide strike if Dr. Ganiyat Popoola is not released by August 26.

The association’s President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, announced this ultimatum during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, expressing frustration over the government’s lack of progress in securing her release.

Dr. Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was abducted on December 27, 2023.

Her husband was released in March, but Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain captive.

Abdullahi revealed that the association has repeatedly contacted security agencies, the Nigerian Medical Association, and various government officials, including the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, without seeing substantial action.

“We have communicated with all relevant bodies but have not received a satisfactory response or engagement,” Abdullahi said.

He emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of healthcare providers and criticized the government for its inaction.

NARD plans to hold a national press conference and protest marches at tertiary hospitals across the country if Dr. Popoola is not freed by the specified date.

Abdullahi expressed appreciation for the support from the public and security agencies but stressed the need for decisive government action.

“It is disheartening that a healthcare provider has been in captivity for over seven months with no clear rescue plan,” Abdullahi added.
