The football community is in mourning following the sudden death of George Baldock, a Panathinaikos and Greece international player, who passed away at the age of 31. Baldock, a former Sheffield United star in the English Premier League, was found dead on Wednesday evening in the swimming pool at his home in Glyfada, a suburb of Athens.

In a statement, Baldock’s family expressed their grief: “We can confirm that George has sadly passed away. As a family, we are in shock at this terrible loss.”

News of Baldock’s death quickly spread across social media, with Greece’s Super League clubs and fans offering tributes. Even rival supporters, known for their hostility toward Panathinaikos, joined in expressing their sorrow for the well-loved player.

Greek state broadcaster ERT reported that Baldock was found at the bottom of the pool, with a bottle of vodka nearby. His wife, who was abroad at the time, raised the alarm after failing to reach him by phone. Police and emergency services were dispatched, and a coroner later confirmed that Baldock had been dead for about five hours. Authorities noted there were no signs of foul play or forced entry.

Baldock had joined Panathinaikos in May, following a seven-year tenure with Sheffield United, who were relegated from the Premier League last season. Of Greek descent through his father, Baldock earned 12 caps for the Greece national team after being called up in 2022 by then-coach Gus Poyet. He had not been selected for Greece’s Nations League match against England due to injury.

The Greek Football Federation paid tribute to Baldock, describing him as “one of our own,” and announced that the national team will wear black armbands during their upcoming game in his honor.

Tributes also poured in from Baldock’s former clubs. Sheffield United changed their website to feature a black-and-white image of the player, along with the message, “RIP George Baldock.” Former teammate Harry Maguire, now a Manchester United defender, posted a tribute on Instagram with a heartbreak emoji and an image of Baldock.

MK Dons, where Baldock began his career, expressed their devastation: “George started his career at Stadium MK, where he worked his way through the youth ranks before reaching the heights of the Premier League. You will always be one of our own, George.”

The Football Association of England also extended their condolences, stating on social media, “We are devastated to learn of the passing of George Baldock at the age of 31. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and teammates.”

Baldock, affectionately known as “Furious George” by Sheffield United fans for his tenacious playing style, once told local media, “I just love winning. I hate losing, and I even hate drawing.”

His sudden death has left the football world in shock, with tributes continuing to pour in for the player, who was admired both on and off the field.
