Tuesday marked a significant milestone in Nigeria’s aviation sector as Emirates Airlines resumed flights to Lagos after a two-year hiatus.
The airline’s return was made even more special with Nigerian-born pilot, Mohammed Madugu, at the controls, flying the aircraft into Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA).
Madugu shared the moment on his X (formerly Twitter) page, proudly posting a video of the landing, which he described as a culmination of rigorous training. “A great plane spotter got my landing into Lagos today… Alhamdulillah,” he captioned.
In addition to operating the flight, Madugu expressed his pride at flying both the Emirates and Nigerian flags high. “Today, I have the honor of operating our inaugural return flight to Lagos… A flight time of slightly over 8 hours today. #EkoOniBaje,” he wrote.
Born on September 21, 1996, Madugu, a native of Kano and the son of Alhaji Sani Madugu, began his aviation career early. In 2016, he was the youngest captain in the Nigerian airline industry, working with Azman Air. He revealed that his passion for flying began when he was six or seven, after a visit to an aircraft cockpit during a family trip to Kano for Sallah celebrations.
Emirates Airlines had suspended operations to Lagos and Abuja in September 2022, citing an inability to repatriate over $80 million in trapped funds.
The return of Emirates flights, led by Madugu, is seen as a symbolic gesture marking a new chapter in the airline’s relationship with Nigeria.
