The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the neutralization of a suspected gunman during a confrontation with armed miscreants in the Igbo Ukwu/Ezinifite Uga area. The encounter occurred during a routine patrol at approximately 11:30 PM on Sunday.
In a statement released on Monday, the police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, detailed that the police were responding to reports of armed men in a black Prado Jeep when they engaged in a gun battle. “On 29/9/2024 at 11:30 PM, the police-led security force, while on patrol within the Aguata LGA, got information of suspected armed men sighted in a black-coloured Prado Jeep along the Igbo Ukwu/Ezinifite Uga axis,” Ikenga explained. He noted that one of the miscreants was killed while the others managed to flee the scene.
Ikenga also reported the recovery of various exhibits, including AK-47 rifles, armored vests, and criminal charms. “The operatives, on an offensive approach to the scene, engaged the armed men in a gun battle and demobilized one of the miscreants while others escaped,” he said.
The police spokesperson detailed the items recovered during the operation: “The security forces recovered two AK-47 rifles, one pump-action gun, two magazines loaded with live ammunition, 15 live cartridges, one black Prado Jeep with two different plate numbers, two police body armored vests, three face caps, one black handbag, and different types of criminal charms.”
A clearance operation is currently underway in the area, with further updates expected to be communicated.
This incident follows a recent attack on September 7, when the Regent of the Oba community in Idemili South LGA, Noel Ezenwa, and residents condemned an assault on the Oba Police Divisional headquarters and the Oba Civic Centre. During that attack, an unidentified group of gunmen targeted the police station, resulting in the death of a police corporal and injuries to others.
