At least five people have died, and several others are being treated at the Infectious Disease Centre in Olodo, Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State, after attending a ‘Love Feast’ popularly known as Ipese ,hosted by a white garment church in Ibadan.
The tragic event occurred last Sunday within the church premises in Apata, Ido Local Government Area, leaving the community in confusion.
A source from the church, speaking anonymously, stated that it remains unclear whether the Ipese meal was the cause of the deaths.
“I ate the same beans as everyone else, including the victims, and nothing happened to me,” the source said, adding that various authorities, including the police, DSS, and even the World Health Organization, are investigating the incident. Their findings have not yet been made public.
An anonymous official at the Infectious Disease Centre confirmed that 50 victims have been treated and discharged, while others continue to receive care.
The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, also confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are still ongoing.
