The Kano State Government has secured a N177.4 billion loan from the French Development Agency to improve water supply in Greater Kano, including the construction of new waterworks at Tamburawa.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Ali Haruna Makoda, announced the development during a two-day project coordination and review workshop in Kano. The event also had representatives from Plateau, Enugu, and Ondo states in attendance.
The project, part of the National Urban Water Reform Project, aims to enhance access to potable water for Kano’s rapidly growing population. It is being backed by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.
Governor Yusuf highlighted the importance of the project, noting that it had been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges but is now set to be completed within the next two years.
Engr. Garba Ahmad Bichi, Managing Director of the Kano State Water Board, added that the initiative includes the construction of a new water intake station with a capacity of 250 million litres per day.
This upgrade is expected to significantly alleviate water shortages in the city, which has been struggling to meet the needs of its expanding population.
