The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to address several unresolved matters, including the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, based on the Nimi Briggs Committee’s 2021 Draft Agreement. ASUU is also demanding the release of withheld salaries from the 2022 strike action.

In a statement issued by ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke, the union expressed frustration with the government’s lack of commitment and delay tactics, which they claim are worsening the crisis in the public university system. ASUU warned that the government has until October 7, 2024, to resolve these lingering issues or risk industrial unrest.

The union’s demands also include the release of unpaid salaries for staff affected by the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), funding for the revitalization of public universities, and payment of Earned Academic Allowances.

ASUU further criticized the proliferation of universities by federal and state governments and called for the reversal of the illegal dissolution of Governing Councils, as well as the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as an alternative to IPPIS. The union warned that failure to address these demands could lead to industrial disharmony in Nigeria’s university system.
