The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is facing increasing pressure to make a decision on the permanent managerial position for the Super Eagles, following Augustine Eguavoen’s recent stint as interim coach during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Under Eguavoen’s leadership, Nigeria secured a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic and a 0-0 draw against Rwanda.

Eguavoen was appointed as interim manager after the NFF’s failed attempts to secure a permanent coach, including the collapse of negotiations with German coach Bruno Labbadia.

Despite the ongoing search for a foreign manager, Eguavoen’s performance in the qualifiers has sparked calls for his permanent appointment.

Former Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu publicly voiced his support on social media, urging the NFF to give Eguavoen more time to develop the team.

Similarly, former Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye advised the NFF to halt the search for a foreign coach, suggesting Eguavoen deserves further opportunities to lead the national team.

John Obi Mikel, former Super Eagles captain, also praised Eguavoen’s leadership, drawing comparisons to renowned coach Carlo Ancelotti for his player management skills.

Mikel, who played under Eguavoen at the U-17 level, highlighted his ability to connect with players.

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong joined the growing support for a local coach, emphasizing the advantages of having a Nigerian coach who understands the players’ backgrounds and experiences.

As calls for Eguavoen’s retention grow louder, the NFF now faces the critical decision of whether to make him the permanent head coach of the Super Eagles.
