Dennis Idahosa, the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, has criticized Governor Godwin Obaseki for his presence at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office during the collation of the state’s governorship election results.
Idahosa argued that the governor had no legitimate reason to be at the electoral commission’s premises.
According to reports, Governor Obaseki arrived at the INEC office in the early hours of Sunday, around 3:30 AM, during the collation process.
His visit prompted a protest led by Idahosa, who, along with other APC supporters, demanded that the governor leave the premises.
“Obaseki must come out. He is not supposed to be here. He is not an INEC staff. Nigeria Police should not compromise,” Idahosa asserted, as protesters gathered outside the INEC office.
The group, prevented from entering the premises by security operatives, continued to shout and bang on the gates, expressing their dissatisfaction with the governor’s presence.
In a separate interview, the APC’s National Secretary, Surajudeen Basiru, echoed Idahosa’s concerns, calling Obaseki’s actions an abuse of office. Basiru stated, “Obaseki is not a candidate. He has no reason to be here.”
Tensions have risen in Edo State as political stakeholders await the official announcement of the governorship election results.
