Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has issued a stern warning to those planning to disrupt the upcoming Edo State governorship election, urging them to abandon any such plans. Speaking during a visit to Benin City ahead of the Saturday poll, Gen. Musa emphasized that the military has been mandated to ensure a peaceful, free, and credible election.
“Our objective is clear: to guarantee that the election is free, fair, and credible,” the CDS stated. “Anyone with intentions other than a peaceful election will face serious consequences. The armed forces will not tolerate any unauthorized individuals carrying weapons to intimidate voters.”
During his strategic meetings with Governor Godwin Obaseki, troops, and other stakeholders, Gen. Musa assured that the military would act professionally and in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a violence-free election. He stressed that only statutory security agencies would be allowed to maintain order, warning local security groups and vigilante members to stay off election duties.
Reiterating the military’s neutrality, Gen. Musa added, “Mr. President has no preferred candidate. His only interest is that the people of Edo State should be free to choose their leader without interference.”
The CDS also reminded military personnel deployed for the election, under “Operation Safe Conduct,” of their critical role, urging them to maintain professionalism. He warned that any personnel found compromising the process would face disciplinary action.
As part of broader security measures, the CDS confirmed that movements on election day will be restricted, with no tolerance for armed convoys or individuals seeking to disrupt the process. “We want this election to go smoothly, without any disturbances,” he concluded.
