Nigeria’s Super Falcons will face arch-rivals South Africa’s Banyana Banyana on Thursday in a crucial African play-off, with the winner advancing to the intercontinental play-off tournament for a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Both African powerhouses saw their hopes of securing automatic qualification through the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) dashed at the quarter-final stage.

The Super Falcons suffered a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon on Sunday, while South Africa were eliminated by hosts Morocco following a 2-1 loss on Saturday.

The meeting between the two continental giants has consequently taken on added significance, with the winner keeping alive their hopes of featuring at the expanded 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Under the new qualification format, the four teams eliminated in the WAFCON quarter-finals enter an African play-off, with the winners of the two fixtures progressing to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Intercontinental Play-Off Tournament.

Nigeria and South Africa will contest one of the African play-offs, while Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire will battle for the other available slot.

For the Super Falcons, Thursday’s encounter provides an opportunity to recover from their disappointing quarter-final exit and maintain their record of qualifying for every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991.

South Africa will equally be determined to bounce back from their defeat to Morocco and keep their hopes of reaching the global showpiece alive.

The four WAFCON semi-finalists — Algeria, Cameroon, Malawi and Morocco — have already secured automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup.

The two winners of the African play-offs, however, will not qualify directly for the tournament. Instead, they will represent Africa at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Intercontinental Play-Off Tournament.

The intercontinental tournament will feature 10 teams, comprising two representatives each from Africa, Asia, CONCACAF and South America, alongside one team from Oceania and one from Europe.

The competition will be played in two phases, with the two African qualifiers entering the first phase scheduled for November and December 2026 before the successful teams advance to the second phase in February 2027.

Three World Cup places will ultimately be available through the intercontinental play-offs.

For Nigeria, however, all attention is now on South Africa, with Thursday’s showdown offering the Super Falcons a crucial second opportunity to keep their World Cup dream alive.
