Lionel Messi made a triumphant return for Inter Miami, scoring two goals and providing an assist in a 3-1 victory against the Philadelphia Union, after nearly three months away from the pitch.
Messi, who had been sidelined due to national team duties and a right ankle injury sustained during the Copa America final against Colombia in July, showed no signs of rust in his first game back. The Argentine star last played for Inter Miami on June 1 but returned to action following three weeks of practice.
Midway through the first half, Messi turned the game around, scoring twice within four minutes to erase an early Philadelphia lead. His first goal, in the 26th minute, came from a pass by Luis Suárez, allowing Messi to glide past Union defender Kai Wagner and find the net. Just four minutes later, he struck again, slotting home a 15-yard shot after receiving a cross from Jordi Alba.
Luis Suárez, who assisted Messi’s first goal, sealed the win with his 17th goal of the season during stoppage time, confirming Miami’s dominance.
Inter Miami has now secured a postseason spot in Major League Soccer (MLS), topping the Supporters’ Shield standings with 62 points. Messi and his team will face Atlanta United next, while the Philadelphia Union will take on New York City FC.
