Atalanta and Nigerian forward, Ademola Lookman, has expressed his excitement after being named on the 30-man shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, calling the recognition a “special feeling.”
Lookman, who has had an outstanding season for both club and country, is the only African player nominated this year, edging out notable names like his compatriot Victor Osimhen, a 2023 nominee, and Egyptian star Mohamed Salah.
The 26-year-old attacker, who joined Atalanta in 2022, quickly made an impact in Serie A. In his debut season, the former Everton player netted 15 goals and provided eight assists in 33 matches.
His second season saw even more success, with Lookman scoring 17 goals and registering 10 assists in 45 appearances.
Lookman’s form also shone on the international stage, where he played a crucial role in Nigeria’s campaign at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking on the Counter Attack Podcast, Lookman recounted how he discovered his Ballon d’Or nomination while with the Super Eagles.
“It’s a special, special feeling,” he said. “I was on the bus coming back from training, and I saw a post that I’d been nominated for the Ballon d’Or. At first, I was surprised, but after seeing the notifications, I realized it was real.”
