Iran has launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles targeting Diego Garcia, a key United States–United Kingdom military base in the Indian Ocean, according to reports citing US officials.
The remote facility is a critical hub for American military operations, including the deployment of long-range bombers and nuclear-powered submarines, and plays a significant role in global defence strategy.
Officials quoted by The Wall Street Journal said the missiles failed to strike the base. One reportedly malfunctioned mid-flight, while the second was intercepted by a US naval vessel using an SM-3 interceptor system, though it remains unclear whether the threat was fully neutralised.
The attempted strike marks a significant escalation, highlighting Iran’s capability to project military force over long distances, with the target located approximately 2,500 miles from its territory.
