The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has resumed operations on the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor following a recent disruption, assuring passengers of enhanced safety measures and improved service delivery.
The Managing Director of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, announced the development on Wednesday, two days after an incident on the route left several passengers injured.
In a statement, Opeifa confirmed that normal services have been restored, stating, “Following the incident on Monday, 16th March 2026, normal train operations have been fully restored through the swift intervention of the Nigerian Railway Corporation.”
He further reassured commuters of their safety, adding, “Passengers can now confidently book tickets, as improved safety and operational measures have been implemented to ensure secure and comfortable journeys.”
The NRC boss emphasised that the corporation’s prompt response helped minimise disruption while reinforcing its commitment to passenger safety and reliable service delivery.
The agency also confirmed the successful resumption of the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service (AKTS), including return trips from Rigasa in Kaduna State, signalling a full return to normal operations along the busy corridor.
Providing details of the earlier incident, the NRC explained that it occurred around 9:16 a.m. near Asham Station. A rear locomotive reportedly became detached while the train was in motion, rolled forward, and struck the rear section of the train.
The corporation clarified that the occurrence was not a collision between two separate trains but involved internal mechanical issues within the same train formation.
Reaffirming the return to normalcy, Opeifa added, “Train services are back to normal — safer and better.”
The Abuja–Kaduna rail line remains one of Nigeria’s busiest transport routes, serving thousands of passengers and providing a vital alternative to road travel between the Federal Capital Territory and Kaduna State.
