The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening professional military education through strategic partnerships with international defence institutions.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, stated this while receiving a delegation from the United States Defence Security Cooperation University (DSCU) at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
The delegation was led by retired Major General Miguel Casteyanos.
In a statement issued by the Army spokesperson, Colonel Apollonia Anele, the COAS said professional military education remains a key pillar in building a modern and adaptable fighting force capable of addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
According to Shaibu, the Nigerian Army will continue to participate in relevant DSCU programmes, particularly courses aimed at strengthening defence management, logistics systems and institutional capacity within the service.
He noted that exposing personnel to specialised training programmes and international academic platforms would improve strategic thinking and enhance institutional knowledge.
The army chief said such initiatives are vital in preparing officers and personnel to effectively manage complex operational and administrative responsibilities in modern military environments.
Shaibu also emphasised that expanding international defence partnerships would contribute significantly to improving professionalism and operational efficiency within the Nigerian Army.
Speaking during the visit, Casteyanos explained that DSCU’s collaboration with the Nigerian Army is focused on institutional capacity building to enable partner nations sustain and replicate military capabilities over time.
He said the university provides specialised courses and advisory support aimed at strengthening defence governance, logistics management and policy development.
Casteyanos added that the ongoing partnership with the Nigerian Army includes initiatives designed to enhance institutional systems such as material readiness, reporting structures and life-cycle management frameworks.
