Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has issued a firm directive to security agencies in the state, declaring that criminal elements will not be allowed to turn Edo into a safe haven.
The governor met with heads of security services on Monday following the circulation of a viral video in which a self-acclaimed terrorist threatened to attack communities in Edo Central Senatorial District. The individual claimed to be operating around Ekpoma and neighbouring areas.
In a statement confirming the meeting, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, said security chiefs briefed Okpebholo on the situation and ongoing measures. He noted that the governor has made security a top priority and that emerging threats were being confronted without delay.
According to Itua, the state’s security architecture is structured for early detection, rapid response and sustained pressure on criminal groups.
He disclosed that, in line with the governor’s directive, the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), local vigilante groups and the Edo State Special Security Squad have launched intensified operations across forests, border communities and known flashpoints.
“Search-and-comb missions are ongoing, backed by enhanced intelligence gathering and coordinated patrols to deny criminal elements safe haven anywhere within the State,” he said.
Itua added that “significant breakthroughs have been recorded,” noting that arrests have already been made in connection with recent security incidents and that multiple leads are being pursued.
He stressed that the operations would continue until all parts of Edo — including urban centres, rural communities and transit routes — are fully secured for residents, commuters and investors.
The CPS urged the public to avoid misinformation and panic-inducing content, warning against reliance on unverified videos circulating online.
