The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has denied reports alleging that it has directed senior secondary school students to offer specific subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.

In a statement issued by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, the Council described the circulating information as “unfounded” and “misleading.”

“We wish to categorically distance ourselves from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject,” Adeshina stated.

WAEC clarified that the development and regulation of curricula in Nigeria are the responsibility of the Federal Government, while the Council’s role is limited to implementing these policies through examination and assessment.

“The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the Federal Government,” Adeshina emphasised. “WAEC operates strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country.”

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and fairness, assuring that all candidates sitting for the 2026 WASSCE will have equal opportunity in the examination process.

“Schools, stakeholders, and the general public are advised to disregard the misleading reports and rely solely on official communications from the Council for accurate information regarding examination guidelines for WASSCE (SC) 2026,” the statement added.
